Bag making

The Bag Makers Story

Karen was a trained dressmaker who worked for a high end fashion shop making clothes and doing alterations. She was busy doing this sort of work throughout the 1960s when people would often have clothes made or make their own clothes. Karen learned her trade through doing an apprenticeship at work.
When the boutique that she worked for had to close down in the 1990s, Karen decided that she did not want to work for anyone else. If she had wanted another dressmaking job, it would have been very difficult to find one because by then most of the dressmaking shops had closed due to ready made garments being widely available and cheaper to buy.
So she decided that she would like to become self employed and work from home. She turned her spare bedroom into a sewing room, placed an advert in the local newsagents window and waited for customers to arrive. Nobody  answered her adverts and Karen did not get any dressmaking work.
This was very disappointing but Karen decided to diversify into another business that she could do while working from home. She went to a fabric sale, brought several rolls of hardwearing fabric and set to work. She had decided to start a bag making business. She designed several different styles of bag and she got to work on sewing some samples. She took these bag samples into several independent shops where she got many orders for her bags. Most of the shops took two or three of each size and style of bag just to see how the customers liked them. All the bags were sold during the first week of being displayed in the shops and all the shopkeepers ordered another batch. Karen and the shopkeepers soon learn which were the most popular sizes and styles of bags. Karen then went to get some more fabric and tried different colours and patterns. She was soon so busy that she had to advertise for some outworkers to help her make the bags. These outworkers were ladies who worked from home doing sewing. Within months Karen was getting enough work to keep several outworkers busy full time. She did think about renting out a workshop and employing staff but she thought that the overheads would be too high. Another reason she did not do this was because the ladies who worked for her all said that they would rather work from home because that sort of work fitted around their family commitments.
Karen has since given up her bag making business because she earned enough money to be able to take early retirement.

Learning to make Curtains , cushions and other soft furnishing.
I was lucky enough to learn curtain making by going to work in a curtain making workshop where experienced curtain makers showed me what to do. If you would like to learn how to make your own curtains, or to earn money from curtain making, then I would suggest that you go on a curtain making course. These courses are often run by self employed curtain makers who have years of experience to share with you.
